The journal GAIA was founded 1992 by an initiative of scientists of the Zentrum Philosophie und Wissenschaftstheorie, University of Konstanz (DE), of the Institute for Economy and the Environment, University of St. Gallen (HSG) (CH), and of the Departement of Environmental Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) (CH). They had founded the "Verein Gaia - Konstanz, St. Gallen, Zurich," which owns the journal.

Editorial Board
The members of the Editorial Board are elected by Verein Gaia – Konstanz, St. Gallen, Zurich by a two-thirds majority at the proposal of the Editorial Board. Criteria for membership are - in addition to qualifications - professional and geographical diversity, a balanced gender ratio as well as the willingness to support GAIA. The members of the Editorial Board take turns in the position of the editor-in-chief. The editor-in-chief is primus inter pares and responsible according to the press law.

The Editorial Board is responsible for the scientific standard and coherence of the journal's orientation.

Scientific Advisory Board
The Scientific Advisory Board comprises persons with proven expertise in the fields of environmental and sustainability sciences and neighbouring disciplines. Verein Gaia – Konstanz, St. Gallen, Zurich decides on the admission of new Scientific Advisory Board members. The aim is to achieve a broad professional and geographical spectrum and a balanced gender mix.

The Scientific Advisory Board ensures that GAIA is anchored in the relevant communities and supports the Editorial Board and editorial office in quality assurance.
