GAIA encourages applying due care in interpreting the following bibliometric indicators. GAIA has signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), pointing to flaws in the calculation and use of the Journal Impact Factor. GAIA also supports the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics, which states ten principles to better guide research evaluation as well as the Coalition on Research Assessment (CoARA), which is asking to base research assessment primarily on qualitative judgement, for which peer review is central, supported by responsible use of quantitative indicators
